BIRDKEEPER PARROT BREEDING FACILITIES

Birdkeeper Parrot Breeding Facilities is a small privately owned Danish breeding station that is specialized in breeding selected parrot species - primarily endangered species - with great professionalism and care, focusing on species conservation and natural behaviour. The breeding facilities cover an area of almost 300 m2 and are located in rural surroundings on the island of Zealand, approximately 65 km west of Denmark's capital, Copenhagen.

🔹 Purpose and philosophy

  • We work purposefully to preserve endangered parrot species within aviculture as an alternative to illegal capture in the wild.
  • In the long term, we want to be able to contribute to controlled release projects, in collaboration with relevant authorities and scientific research environments, in the parrots' natural habitats in their countries of origin.
  • Our core value is:

“Natural breeding, natural behaviour” - therefore no chicks are hand-reared. All birds grow up with their parents to ensure

optimal health, development and natural socialization.

🔹 Working methods and breeding

  • Approximately 10 different parrot species are kept and bred, carefully selected for their conservation importance and personal interest.
  • No birds are bred for use as pets - for animal welfare reasons, all juvenile birds are sold exclusively to aviaries, where they can live in natural social settings with one or more conspecifics.
  • The young birds are exclusively parent-reared and therefore exhibit healthy and natural behaviour.
  • Breeding pairs are primarily kept in pairs in spacious aviaries, where there is full control over genetic origin.
  • New, unrelated breeding birds are continuously added to ensure genetic diversity and healthy lineages.

🔹 Health and disease prevention

  • All breeding birds have tested negative for several serious, contagious bird diseases at internationally recognized specialist laboratories in Europe, including:

              o Avian Borna Virus (ABV/PDD)

              o Avian Polyoma Virus (APV)

o Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD)

o Chlamydophila psittaci (Ornithosis (parrot disease)).

  • The disease screening uses PCR technology both through blood, feathers and cloacal swab. When serological tests are available, the parrots are also usually tested based on these methods for the same diseases for safety reasons, including to avoid "healthy carriers" of the diseases.
  • Young birds are sold only if they are healthy and disease-free.
  • The birds are cared for according to established, written Best Practice routines for hygiene and infection prevention (serious buyers can get insight into the procedures).
  • An avian veterinarian specializing in parrots supervises the population.

🔹 Feeding and well-being

  • The birds are fed a varied and natural diet, adapted to the needs of the individual species to ensure a strong immune system and avoid feeding dependence on a specific brand.
  • The aviaries are regularly enriched with fresh forage plants and natural materials to support the birds' mental well-being and natural behaviour.

🔹 Purchase and reservation

  • It is possible to get on a free waiting list for specific species (please contact us for information).
  • If a permanent reservation is desired, a deposit is required.
  • We only sell juvenile birds with natural behaviour, and only to buyers who offer suitable conditions with one or more conspecifics.
